Social Skills Group--Fostering Cooperation & Teamwork
The ability to work collaboratively with peers is a skill that reaps lifelong benefits. This skill is built through group decision making/planning, cooperative projects and games, and by creating a feeling of membership. Emphasis is placed on teaching children to balance personal desires with the desires of the group. Learning to stand up for yourself without dominating, to laugh with friends instead of at them, and to play actively while watching out for others are important skills addressed in group.
Relationship Building
Groups at Bridges provide an opportunity to develop quality relationships in a supportive environment. Skills necessary to make and keep friends are addressed in every session. Often children form their first real friendships with group members due to the high level of support and the fact that people tend to form friendships with those who are similar to themselves.
Individual Attention
Small group size (2-6 members) and two instructors ensure that each child is given the support they need to participate fully. Each group member’s involvement is encouraged and valued.
Progression of Skills
In beginning groups the focus is on attending to peers, imitating, and taking turns while in advanced groups children learn to evaluate and monitor their own behavior, participate in balanced group discussions, and celebrate their peers’ achievements.
